MAVERICKS COMPLETE SWEEP OF CYCLONES

Second Straight Third Period Comeback Falls Short in Road Finale

Independence, MO- The Cincinnati Cyclones (18-20-4-0) dropped a 5-2 decision to the Missouri Mavericks on Saturday night. Defenseman Craig Dalrymple and Saverio Posa netted the goals for Cincinnati.

The goals came fast and early in this one, as just 4:31 in Missouri took a 1-0 lead when forward Rocco Carzo scored directly off a face-off.

Cincinnati was not deterred and responded 1:02 later when Posa slid a pass from the right circle to Dalrymple at the left point, and he hammered a shot that beat Mavericks goaltender Josh Robinson to tie the game, 1-1.

Just 10 seconds later, Missouri regained the lead when forward Matt Robertson scored his second goal in as many nights. The Mavericks tacked on one more at the 7:45 mark from forward Carter Verhaeghe to extend their lead to 3-1.

That 3-1 Missouri lead held up throughout the remainder of the first, and in the second, Verhaeghe added one more late in the frame to push the Mavericks’ lead to 4-1 after 40 minutes

The Mavericks opened up the scoring in the third period with a shorthanded marker from forward Kyle Schempp, extending their led to 5-1.

With 2:30 to play in regulation, the Cyclones pulled to within three when forward Jordan Sims slid a pass to Posa, and he fired a slapshot from the tops of the circles past Robinson to cut Cincinnati’s deficit to 5-2. That was all the offense the Cyclones were able to muster, as the Mavericks held on for the 5-2 win, backed by 27 saves from Robinson.

The Cyclones were outshot, 32-29 on the night, with netminder Michael Houser turning aside 27 in the loss. Cincinnati returns home for the first of six straight, beginning with the Rapid City Rush. Face-off is scheduled for 7:35pm ET.
