TEDDY BEARS RAIN DOWN IN HUGE THROWBACK NIGHT WIN
Cyclones Victorious in Raucous Affair
Cincinnati, OH- The Cincinnati Cyclones collected a 4-2 Throwback Night win over the Wheeling Nailers, in front of 14,025 fans at U.S. Bank Arena. Forward Justin Danforth tallied a pair of goals, while forwards Shawn O’Donnell and Brandon McNally added lone tallies for the Cyclones.
The intensity in this one was felt immediately in the opening period, as the two sides combined for 24 minutes in penalties, including a fight between Cincinnati forward Justin Vaive and Wheeling’s Dan Milan. The teams exchanged some quality scoring opportunities, however no pucks crossed the goal line and the game headed into the locker room scoreless after 20 minutes.
It took 51 seconds for the Nailers to take a 1-0 lead in the second period when forward Cam Brown found the back of the net for his seventh of the season.
The Cyclones wasted little time tying the game up, as roughly three minutes later while on the power play, forward Jesse Schultz sent a pass to O’Donnell who rang a shot off the post and in to tie the game, 1-1, and cause the teddy bears to fly onto the ice.
Cincinnati saw some more magic on the power play 7:56 into the frame, when a shot from Schultz was kicked out by Nailers goaltender Colin Stevens, but the rebound went to Danforth who slammed it into give the ‘Clones a 2-1 lead after the second period.
The third period saw the Cyclones offense continue to soar, as just 2:56 in, a shot from defenseman Arvin Atwal was deflected by Stevens, but the rebound went to McNally who stuffed it in to give Cincinnati a 3-1 lead.
That lead became 4-1 at the 6:07 mark when Danforth was sprung free on a breakaway and slid a shot five-hole for his second of the night.
Wheeling struck on the power play with 5:24 left in the third when former Cyclone Jaynen Rissling lit the lamp to cut the Nailers deficit to 4-2, however that was all the offense they were able to muster, as the Cyclones skated to a 4-2 win.
Cincinnati outshot Wheeling, 41-33 on the night, with goaltender Jonas Johansson stopping 31 in the win. Saturday was a penalty-filled affair as well, as the sides combined for 64 minutes of penalties. Cincinnati returns home next Friday to take on the Kansas City Mavericks. Face-off is slated for 7:35pm ET.
